Luke Gilkerson - Covenant Eyes “Blogmeister” or “Blog Spammer”?

Ok, so I have a question to pose to my readers about blog spam. There is this guy named Luke Gilkerson, who is on the payroll at Covenant Eyes (a competitor to InternetSafety.com) who is paid to go around blogging about their products. As you know I started a new Internet Filtering Blog.

About a week ago Luke posts a comment on this post: Number of URL’s In An Internet Filter Database: Does It Matter?

Filtering is a great tool, but it’s not the only kind of software out there. Have you ever heard of accountability software? Accountability software is specifically for adults who want to guard where they go online without any blocking or filtering. Combined with filtering, it’s a great Internet safety solution for the whole family. If you want more info about it check out my post “Is Filtering All There Is?” - http://www.covenanteyes.com/blog/2008/06/12/is-filtering-all-the re-is-introducing-accountability-software/ Also, check out - http://www.blog.cantufind.com/2008/06/24/covenant-eyes/

The a week later he comes back and posts another comment on this post: New Consumer Internet Filter - Livia Web Protection

Same exact comment on two posts within a week. I had seen this same post on another blog, so I dug around online, and found the same post on these other sites. Sometimes he will add a sentence to the beginning of it.

Copy/pasting the same comment multiple times directing you to a website for business purposes. That sounds very much like the definition of blog spam to me.

***Editor’s Note: this was posted on my other blog shortly after this post went live. I am putting here because it is more on topic.***

Hello. Its the “blog spammer” here. Just wanted to apologize for some of my cut-and-paste jobs in the comments to others blogs. I’ll try to be a little more creative and conversational in some of my replies. I’m very much a rookie to the blogging etiquette and I was unaware comments like that were unwelcome. Excuse my ignorance. I try not to post any comment that is “random” on any blog, mostly just on blog posts that display an interest in things that interest me.

    Blessings,
    Luke Gilkerson

Luke, thanks for the apology. Best of luck in your future blogging.

The more correct term for this may be “comment spamming”. I find it especially annoying when someone trolls the blogsphere looking for the mention of a competitor’s product so they can post a link to their website. I always get a laugh when I see a post saying “I love Safe Eyes and here’s why…” and the first comment is, “Have you heard about Internet accountability and Covenant Eyes”. It would be one thing to post relevant information as a comment on a blog posting about Internet Safety or parental controls in general, but it is just rude/annoying to go around constantly posting just to promote your product or increase your search engine ranking.

Disclosure: Covenant Eyes is an advertiser with Lifespring Media.

Having talked with Luke recently, I can attest to the fact that he is a rookie to blogging and other “new media” venues. I believe that the folks at Covenant Eyes have their hearts in the right place, and that they truly are doing their best to figure out how to be a valuable part of the community.
