iPhone Problems

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

So Friday I went and bought an iPhone to test a few things out for work. Purchase was easy, activation was easy (after updating Mac OSX and iTunes). But shortly after the phone started going into vibrate mode randomly. I played with it for a few minutes, started showing it to others at the office, and it kept happening.

After about an hour it stopped, so I thought it was done, but after about another half hour it starts doing it again. I decided it must be broken so I bundled everything up and took it back to the AT&T store around the corner. After two AT&T employees took 20 minutes to determine it was doing what I told them, they told me they couldn’t be of any help, I had to go to an Apple store, or I could return it and get a new one, but there would be a 10% restocking fee.

Not wanting to drive across town to the Apple store, but at the same time not wanting to pay $50 for a broken phone I opted for the Apple Store. On my drive over there it once again decided to start working right and not vibrate randomly. So my time with an Apple Genius came up and the phone still wasn’t acting up. So he said maybe if it started again I should do a software restore, however we both kindda agreed it probably wasn’t software because he had never seen or heard of the problem before. So I left with no solution.

I go to the food court to get some dinner and the iPhone decided to start vibrating again. So I basically run back through the mall to the Apple store. Went up to to the tech bench and gingerly set the iphone on the counter. The guy was helping another customer and said “I guess it started doing it again, I’ll be right with you”.

Once he got through he took a look at it, tried a few simple things like the silent mode switch and then proclaimed “Some people would pay extra for this feature”, to which I promptly replied “Yeah, but my wife won’t let me make calls on it”. He doubled over in laughter and said “OK I’m gonna just swap it out”. I don’t know if it was my humor or just good customer service that scored me the replacement phone.

The new iPhone has been problem free so far. Look for an upcoming post on my thoughts on the iPhone.

InternetSafety.com

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Sunday night the company that I founded about 8 years ago dropped its original name and became InternetSafety.com. It is a little strange not to be calling it by its old name anymore (which I am purposely not mentioning to train myself not to say or type it….that is hard after 8 years).

A lot of people have asked me if I feel bad about the name change. The answer is no. Since the first day the idea was hatched, it has just made sense. The name better reflects the companies market leading position and our vision…to make the Internet safer. Over the months to come you will see the site expand to offer even more internet safety information with articles by me and other leaders in the Internet safety space.

The other thing pretty much everyone asks me is “How did you get that name?”  Answer: magic.

The Scary Side of VOIP

An interesting think about this. This company had 200,000 customers, was the number 2 VOIP carrier, and I never heard of them before. How weird that they just close up shop.
