CNN Trying To Be Funny

Friday, October 27th, 2006

I came across this story on CNN about Bush using “The Google”.  In a recent interview he said he used “The Google” for “Maps”.  CNN went on to say he used them to look at satellite photo’s of his ranch in Crawford.  Look CNN, the video was slightly amusing, but primarily because you use clips from The Daily Show about Internet Tubes.  CNN your just not setup to be funny, it’s not your format.  Your format is more the talk-before-you-have-all-the-facts format.  Leave the funny stuff to the funny guys.

You totally missed the funny part that he uses it for MAPS!  Come on…this is a guy that has a fleet or limo’s, helicopters, and planes, and whatever else.  Why does he need a map?  Well he really was using it to look at Satellite images of his ranch….really?  I mean, this is the leader of the free world, he has the entire US intelligence arm at his command.  With all of the intelligence resources at his disposal he uses “The Google” to get satellite photos of his ranch!  Seriously?  Can’t he call a buddy at the CIA and say “Hey man, can you get me a picture of ‘The Ranch’ from one of them Satellites.  That would be cool heh heh heh.”

Maybe John Stewart will do something with this that will be funnier than CNN.

Testing Operating Systems

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

I have been working with both Vista from Microsoft and Leopard from Apple in recent days.  Now I can’t comment on what is inside because I am bound by NDA’s on both fronts.  But while installing Leopard this weekend I noticed how much easier they made it to test with one machine.

With my Vista testing I took and extra machine I had laying around and installed Vista on it.  I had to do this because it likes to take over your system.  I might have been able to figure out some kind of dual boot scenario, but didn’t want to mess up my machine trying.

By contrast I downloaded Leopard, plugged in an external usb hard drive.  Booted the installer and installed the OS to the external USB hard drive.  No chance of messing up my production work environment.  Just plug in the USB Drive hold down ALT when I boot and choose the external USB drive and boot Leopard.  Reboot and choose my old Tiger volume and I’m back to my production box again.  Not to mention I have bootcamp’d my Macbook, so I can boot Windows also.
Takes notes MS, that’s how multi-boot should work.

Windows Mobile Phones

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

There are 6 million of these Windows Mobile phones (read: phones that crash) on the market. MS thinks it will double to 12 million by next year. http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6128326.html At least I’m not alone in my Windows Mobile phone pain, there are 6 million other folks with the same problems!

But this does raise an interesting question. I have had 5 windows mobile phones in a year, my brother has had two. I know several other folks that have had 2. I know 4 people with Windows Mobile phones. Between us all we have had 12 phones. That is an average of 3 phones per person. So there are probably only 2 million people stuck with these phones. They don’t want to pay another $200-$300 for something that works because they just paid that for something that was supposed to work. Windows Mobile Sucks!

5th Phone In A Year.

Friday, October 20th, 2006

Well I am onto yet another new phone from Verizon Wireless.  My XV6700 has been freezing up, particularly when answering calls.  Then last week I started getting a vibrating sound in the speaker when people would talk to me.

While very very annoying, I have come to the realization that this phone runs windows and will need to be rebooted weekly.  The only way to fix it would be to go to a non-windows based phone (which I am still considering).  But the vibrating sound issue had to be fixed.  So I called Verizon, and the first thing the tech wanted me to do was to do a soft reset.  He started describing how to do it, and I said “Oh I’m all to familiar with that”.  He asked why, and I explained the freezing issue when taking a call.

After seeing the history on how many phones I have been through he offered a new XV6700 without hesitation.  So this is my 5th Windows Mobile based smart phone this year.  Maybe it will fix my the freezing up issue, but I’m not holding my breath.  Might be time to try a blackberry.

IE 7

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Long ago I switched to firefox for my web browser.  But with the upcoming release of IE 7 I felt it necessary to do a little testing before it got into too wide of circulation so that we could be assured there weren’t any compatibility issues with Safe Eyes.

I just realized that it has a little search bar like firefox in the upper right hand corner.  Oddly enough this searched google.com as it’s default.  When you click to change the “Search Provider” it only has google.  No others like say Live.com or MSN.com.   Is that strange?

Update - I checked IE 7 on an install of Vista RC2 and it has Live Search and Live Search only.  So it might do google on the XP upgrade side.  I dunno, I still think it is an interesting move for it to not have live search and google on my XP box.

Buckhead Burrito Grill Day

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

Today was Wednesday. Pretty much every Wednesday I go to Buckhead Burrito Grill for lunch. I usually get a rio burrito. So being a creature of habit I drove down there today and it was closed! I felt bewildered….what was I to do? Where was I to eat? Chilitos was around the corner, but after my problem with moldy chips I said I would never go back there. So I didn’t. But I needed something spicy, because that was what I was in the mood for after thinking about a rio burrito all morning. So I drove a few streets over and got some hot wings instead. It hit the spot. Hopefully BBG will be open next week.
